"Hybrid corn seed project will allow to obtain new hybrids resistant to various soil and climatic conditions, stress factors"

The project "Organization of hybrid corn seed-growing production in Azerbaijan" funded by the Ministry of Agriculture has been implemented since last year. As a result of the project, serious results have been achieved at the Research Institute of Crop Husbandry.

As a foreign expert in the project, scientists from the Adana Institute of Theoretical Research in Turkey, Dr. Ibrahim Jerit and Dr. Gonul Jomertpay attended. Azerbaijan was represented by Javanshir Talai, department head of the Agrarian Science and Innovation Center, and Halima Mammadova, senior researcher at the Plant Breeding Department of the Research Institute of Crop Husbandry. Within the framework of the project, local hybrid lines were obtained for the first time in the country during the first six months of last year (July 18-December 28) by applying the Innovative Double haploid technique. Within the framework of the project, local hybrid lines were obtained for the first time in the country during the first six months of last year (July 18-December 28) by applying the Innovative Double haploid technique. For the application of the technology, haploid seeds obtained in Turkey through special Inducer lines were brought to Azerbaijan by experts, here, dihaploid seeds were obtained by halving the number of genes by exposuring with the substance colchicine, the germination of seedlings obtained by special care measuresunder laboratory conditions in the Research Institute of Crop Husbandry  .where dihaploid seeds were obtained by splitting the gene number by sprouting the seedlings obtained with special care measures in the laboratory of the  Research Institute of Crop Husbandry. Then these seeds are again made into seedlings in the laboratory and was moved to the open field. Due to the cold months at the time of the experiment, the planting greenhouse was covered with polyethylene. During the growing season, the seedlings were provided with all agro-technical services, and each plant was self-pollinated. As a result, 8 pure hybrid lines were obtained with Double haploid technique applied in our country for the first time.

Research on these lines will continue at the institute in 2020. Currently, the project executor Halima Mammadova is continuing the research. Statistical analysis of the purchased lines has been carried out and seeds have been planted. This year, in order to increase the number of seeds in the lines, each line will be self-pollinated. This year, it is planned to analyze DNA markers using special testers to determine the genetic similarity of the obtained lines. As a result, the research aims to obtain 56 hybrid corn samples. The best of these hybrids will be selected and submitted to the state register. At the next stage, the seed of hybrids that will pass the register will be organized and presented to our farmers in the coming years. It should be noted that the difference between Double haploid technology and classical selection methods is that, first of all, hybrids that can be obtained in 7-8 years are obtained in only 2-3 years, and the second advantage is the complete genetic purity of the obtained lines and this means obtaining high quality hybrid material.

Halima Mammadova said that Double haploid technology can be used to obtain a large number of new corn hybrids in Azerbaijan that are resistant to various soil and climatic conditions, abiotic and biotic stress factors.
